The Director of Finance is a vital member of the staff of Foundry United Methodist Church, a large downtown Washington DC church whose diverse, ecumenical congregation and tradition of leadership in the community date to 1814. The Director of Finance shares Foundry’s core values, among them a belief in Christ and His teachings, the commandment to serve others and to act and speak for the powerless, a compelling desire for diversity and full inclusion of all God’s children in the life of the church, and the critical nature of curiosity and intellectual honesty as we discern God’s path for us.


The Director of Finance is responsible for managing the fiscal operations of Foundry United Methodist Church and all associated entities.  The responsibilities include financial management and reporting, budget preparation/monitoring, and investment administration. The Director of Finance works collaboratively with the Church Business Administrator and directly with the Finance Committee to ensure financial accountability to enable the goals and ministries of the church to be carried out in alignment with the church’s vision and Statement of Call.  


Essential Functions


  • Manage all accounting and audit processes in order to: 
    • Assure proper recording of all income, expenses, and journal entries; timely processing of accounts payable, bank and other reconciliations.  Analyze all general ledger accounts for proper department cost allocations and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts. 
    • Oversee the contribution process to include counting team and recordkeeping. 
    • Provide weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting for appropriate processes.
    • Liaison with Church Treasurer, Finance Committee, Audit Committee and banking representatives
    • Serves as primary liaison to auditors and prepares all audit schedules and responds to auditor questions and concerns
    • Recommends, to the Church Business Administrator, changes and improvements to the accounting policies and procedures manual
  • Provide budgetary oversight to best facilitate the goals and ministries of the church by:
    • Analyzing and monitoring various budget reports on a periodic basis to ensure financial activity has been recorded accurately and for variances with the approved budget
    • Demonstrating a full understanding of the ministries and activities of Foundry Church in order to provide for goal based budgeting processes
    • Coordinating the budgeting process with the Church Business Administrator, which includes working collaboratively with all Program Staff and Committee’s to collect and analyze data necessary to prepare the annual operating budget
    • Supporting the Church Business Administrator with Annual Stewardship Campaign
  • Implement Human Resource procedures that:
    • Manages the payroll process, and prepares all legally expected and other requested reports on an appropriate timely basis.
    • Manages and administers the employee benefits program to include employee enrollment.
    • Monitors records of attendance of all staff as it pertains to payroll.
    • Manages and maintains all employee files and payroll records as appropriate to carry out the fiscal processes. 
    • Recommends to the Church Business Administrator changes and improvements to the fiscal policies and procedures applicable to the Church’s personnel policies and manual. 
  • Provides oversight and supervision of the Financial Assistant(s)
  • Provide oversight to the administration of all investments by:
    • Serving as primary liaison to the investment managers/custodians
    • Monitoring cash to be invested and assesses cash needs
    • Preparing reconciliation of the custodians’ records to the corporate records on a timely basis
    • Providing investment reporting to the Investment Ministry Team and the Finance Committee
    • Support the Church Business Administrator with maintaining current investment policies and procedures.
  • Assist and advise Church Business Administrator in areas of Risk Management by:
    • Serving as primary liaison with insurance companies and coordinating the insurance renewal process
    • Oversight of Tax Exempt Status in the appropriate jurisdictions
  • Assist the Church Business Administrator in other related duties as required


Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting 
  • Minimum of four years of accounting experience.
  • Public accounting experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a non-profit organization is preferred.
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications
