sacred resistance
Join us for the second listening sessions on the eve of elections as we continue to re-connect with our neighbors. We'll hear a recap of last Sunday's session and then take time to connect with each other around our passions for service and advocacy.
Equal Exchange is back!

Our Advent fair trade in-person gift buying is back! This fall, get ahead of the holiday shopping by buying fair trade products from Equal Exchange (a cooperative partnering with interfaith groups such as the United Methodist Committee on Relief) during the coffee hour. You can pick up chocolate, coffee, Palestinian dates, and olive oil November 20 - December 11. You can also make a special order on November 20 and 27.

Fair Trade is a way of doing business that ultimately aims to do justice — to advance economic, social, and environmental goals such as raising/stabilizing the incomes of small-scale farmers, farm workers, and artisans, and promoting safe and sustainable farming methods and working conditions. Such goals may be even more important now as climate change is forcing some people to migrate and the COVID pandemic has both disrupted trade, increasing hardship for small farmers, and demonstrated how inter-connected we all are. A particular concern is the exploitation of child labor in producing cocoa for chocolate. According to the US Department of Labor, more than 2 million children in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire work in hazardous conditions growing cocoa. While some companies have begun tracing their supply chains to prevent child labor, the vast majority of the 3 million tons of cocoa produced each year come from small farms in West Africa, where farmers and their children live on less than $1 per day and child labor is common.

Volunteering with Foundry
As part of Foundry's commitment to sustainability and caring for God's creation, Foundry will begin phasing in the use of ceramic/stoneware mugs and silverware instead of disposable products. We are excited to introduce the use of reusable plates soon! We are still in need of coffee hour volunteers to help transport these items to the dishwasher at the end of each coffee hour. Please contact Jackie at jackie@foundryumc.org if you are interested!
Please join fellow Foundry members the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. until noon at Christ House! Located at 1717 Columbia Road NW in Adam’s Morgan, Christ House is a 24-hour residential medical facility for un-housed people. If you are interested, contact Chelsey Jones at christhouse@foundryumc.org.
Foundry’s ID Ministry will once again be serving our community on the first and third Saturdays of the month this Fall — and we need volunteers! If you are interested in a very meaningful and life-changing volunteer opportunity, please email  idministry@foundryumc.org.
Our fantastic ESL program is looking for a volunteer on Thursday nights to help welcome and direct students to classes. It is an easy but important role! If interested email esl@foundryumc.org.
Community Events
The United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) Early Response Team (ERT) certification training opportunities:

Early Response Teams respond during the first phase of disaster relief, providing Christian presence. Train to be ready to respond and know the first steps to help. Registration fee is $55, which includes training manual. UMCOR ERT badge, T-shirt and background check fee (forms will be handed out at training). Given the recent news of the hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Florida, this training is more important than ever.

The Baltimore-Washington Conference ERT Instructors have planned to offer five trainings spread out across the conference, at different times to help alleviate travel times for participants, in 2022. This year we are offering the following trainings dates and locations for ERT Certifications and Re-Certification Trainings:

Nov 12 at the Mission Center in Fulton, MD

The Certification course will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those Saturday dates. Please email Rev. Ben Roberts at broberts@foundryumc.org if interested (scholarships available.)

This year we will participate as a team with Asbury UMC and John Wesley AMEZ  in SOME’s (So Others Might Eat) Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. It is a fun and healthy way to contribute to SOME’s work and help our community. Click here to register.
Be sure to register as the “JAF Team.” Wear your Foundry shirt and meet at 8:30am at the DC flag pole on Freedom plaza, across from the Wilson building just off the north side Pennsylvania Ave. Out of town? Too busy? You can participate virtually here.
Email Jackie Wright at  with any questions!

Save the date for November 1st from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm and join WIN's public housing leaders in lifting our proposal for change and calling on ALL of our appointed and elected officials to action.

WHO: DCHA Residents and Washington Interfaith Network (WIN) Community Leaders
WHAT: DCHA Residents and WIN leaders present a community based proposal for the future of DCHA and call on all elected officials to use their power to support residents.
WHEN: Tuesday, November 1st, 2022 at 6:30pm WHERE: Virtually via Zoom. Register here.

There is a lot of attention on DCHA right now, sparked by the recent HUD report. The HUD report, although egregious, is not surprising; in fact, the majority of the issues outlined are almost the same as the 2018 HUD report that re-launched WIN into organizing alongside residents in public housing. WIN, alongside residents, have developed brilliant, bold, and realistic proposals grounded in experience and best practices. This moment will either be political posturing that leads to the status quo or it can lead to the bold long-term solutions that residents deserve. We believe residents aren't the problem; residents are a central part of the solution.

Come and celebrate with us at WIN's annual fundraiser, which will take place on Thursday, November 10th, from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at All Souls Church Unitarian, located at 1500 Harvard St NW, Washington, DC 20009.

We are grateful to our partners, leaders, and organizers and can't wait to celebrate with you all. We sincerely thank our donors for your unwavering devotion to WIN, its purpose, and its mission.

We are currently working towards our annual goal of $150,000. As 2022 draws to a close, please consider donating to WIN to help us continue to thrive. There are a couple of ways to contribute to The Washington Interfaith Network: Purchase a ticket through our Eventbrite event page, or donate through our website.

Event attendees, please register for the event.
