Listening for God: An Evening of Prayer and Discernment

July 14, 2010 and August 11, 2010 from 6:45pm to 8pm

A lay lead prayer service took place in the chapel beginning at 6:45 p.m. Light refreshments were served, then at 7:00 p.m., prayer services geban. The services included time for silent prayer, readings, music, and psalms.

• Chapel Prayer Center Open

September 12, 2010 and September 19, 2010 from 10:30am to 1pm

A prayer center was available in the front of the chapel for those seeking to pray for discernment. The prayer center was open to all, and ibcluded resources about praying for discernment.

• Listening for God: Spiritually Led, Prayerfully Leading

September 25, 2010 from 1pm to 2pm

A service kicked off a prayer vigil that led up up to the Congregational Vote on Sunday September 26th. The service opened with singing and psalms. Rev. Dean Synder spoke and commissioned the prayer vigil. The choir led in singing, and the service closed in silence as the vigil began.

 

DISCUSSION SESSIONS

• Past and Present: Foundry and Same-Sex Marriage

May 23, 2010 from 10:45am to 11:45am and 12:30pm to 1:30pm

A discussion of Foundry's history, from Foundry's decision to become a reconciling congregation in October 1995, to the recognition of lesbian and gay committed relationships in 2007. This session also included a Q&A on the Congregational Council's policy process. A timeline document, "Key Policy Events in the Greater United Methodist Church and at Foundry UMC Regarding Homosexuality" was shared.

• The UMC Connection: How Connectedness Makes Inclusiveness Difficult

June 20, 2010 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm

The Congregational Council hosted a presentation on D.C.'s same-sex marriage law and Foundry's practical and legal options under that law. The presentation took place at 10:45 and 12:30 -- after each of the morning services -- in the Chapel. There was a question and answer session at the end of each presentation. Representatives from Kirkland & Ellis were in attendance.

• Last Day to Submit Comments to Congregational Council

July 18, 2010 all day

A request was made to please submit  comments and questions to the Congregational Council by July 18th so that a final proposed policy can be formulated based on the congregation's feedback by July 25th.

• Q & A with Bishop Robinson

July 18, 2010 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Following his sermon, the Right Rev. Bishop V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, provided answers to questions from the Foundry congregation. His trailblazing experience shed light on Foundry's current discernment process regarding our marriage policy.

• Release of Final Policy Proposal for Consideration

July 25, 2010 from 9:30am to 5:30pm

The final policy proposal, incorporating the congregation's feedback, was announced at the 9:30, 11:00 and 5:30 services.

• Small Group Discussion 1

July 31, 2010 from 4pm to 5:30pm

Hosts Jeff Thurston and Charlie Berardesco invited a discussion at their home for wine and cheese and conversation with other Foundry members, as part of Foundry's Summer of Great Discernment. Invitations included approximately 10-12 people.

• Small Group Discussion 2

August 1, 2010 from 5pm to 7pm

Jay and Camilla invited a group to their home for a potluck and discussion. Attendees were asked to bring their favorite dish to share. Families were encouraged to attend. Childcare was provided. It was limited to 20 adults and kids.

Jesse and Carrie Sanders invited discussion at their home  Sunday, August 15 at 5:00 pm. It included a potluck and discussion.
